They're idiots with too much money to spend machining the gearbox and inventing parts, and are welcome to write me checks and send me the cash they would spend after I send them an overdrive gearbox. This will not accept an overdrive, period. Volvo also has a straight manual 4-speed gearbox without overdrive, the M40. The two have different mainshafts, the overdrive units D & J will not interchange with each other. They also built the M410 with J-type overdrive, which is a heavy duty unit found only on the 1970 1800E and in 164 model volvos. M41 with D type overdrive, and M41 with J type overdrive. Volvo for 1800 series has three manual gearboxes. I'm not a triumph guy, but I know one, and have bought parts for the overdrives based on the interchange. I think the parts are a spacer, adaptor plate, new mainshaft, and the overdrive itself. However, if you have a TR3 already with overdrive, the overdrive units on the transmission will interchange (Volvo used Laycock d'Normanville D type and J type overdrives).Ģ - If your TR3 does not have overdrive already, you will need some special Triumph only parts to make your gearbox change to accept an overdrive. They didn't answer your questions, that's why you're confused!ġ - no, a Volvo M41 (overdrive transmission) will not directly mount to you TR3 engine.
